Verdant vine-drenched slopes, champagne houses on every turn, to stop at, sample and stock up; from the well known Moet, Mumm, Canard Duchene… to the just as delicious, fantastically priced, boutique producers, Champagne is a trip I will remember fondly for ever. Pack a tent and ‘glamp’ at the excellent site just outside the Champagne capital of Epernay, where you can walk the Rue de Champagne, stop for a degustation menu at the one of the champagne bars, or upgrade to the delicious Royal Champagne Hotel near Reims – a former favourite of Napoleon. A car is a must to get the most from the region: explore nearby Bouzy, Dizy, Hautvillers (the home of Dom Perignon, surrounded by the house’s premier cru crops), Verzy (with the fairy tale forest of Faux de Verzy), Verzenay, and Cramant, with its giant champagne bottle, before heading south, through tiny villages, past sunflower fields to the 16th century town of Troyes. J’adore Champagne, and you will too!
